Clinical Trial Management - Making the Complex Simple

Posted by John O'Sullivan on Nov 23, 2016 6:22:19 PM

“Simple can be harder than complex: you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.” – Steve Jobs

Our Aim

When developing the Longboat Platform, one of our main aims was to make the complex simple - to produce a state-of-the-art user interface for our portals that study teams, investigators, and site staff would actually want to use and intuitively know how to use, with the information they needed tailored to suit each user’s needs and never more than a couple of clicks away.

Why Did We Develop the Longboat Platform?

We had seen too many clinical trial systems in the past that were over-engineered, over-complex, and didn’t make the lives of the study team, monitors, or site staff any easier. We wanted to change that.

How Did We Do It?

Well, our team consists of experts with many years of experience in clinical trial management, graphic and instructional design, software development, and quality, so together, we designed every piece of our portal around two simple questions:
  • What is it that busy study personnel want to see?
  • How can we make it easy to access the information they need?
We also conducted in-depth market research using focus groups consisting of study teams, CROs, Clinical Research Associates, Principle Investigators & Clinical Research Coordinators, as well as usability testing with users who had never seen the Longboat system before to ensure that our portal would:
  • Provide exactly what each role in a clinical trial requires, and not what we thought they would require.
  • Be intuitive to use, even to those who were viewing the Longboat Platform for the first time.

Why is Simplicity So Important?

I often marvel at my nephew’s ability to pick up my iPhone/iPad, open the YouTube app, search for his favorite cartoon, play the required clip, jump forward to his favorite scene, adjust the volume, etc….all without ever being shown in any great detail how to use the iPhone/iPad. My nephew is three by the way, and it is simplicity in design that allows him to perform these tasks as if they are second nature to him. He doesn’t have to think about where he needs to click/tap next, it’s instinctive. It is this simplicity that Longboat strove for when designing our platform.

What Has Longboat Made simple?

Clinical trial staff are very busy people, and we understand that. That’s why we made accessing Longboat from anywhere simple too. You see, you don’t need to be chained to your PC to access Longboat – it works on mobile platforms such as tablets and phones too, so you can get the information you need whenever/wherever it suits your busy schedule. SIMPLE!
